Embedded Planet selects Timesys’ Linux solution for dual-core Advanced Mezzanine Card

Industry-leading open-source software development environment accelerates customers’ time-to-market

Pittsburgh, PA – September 1, 2009Timesys Corporation (https://timesys.com), provider of LinuxLink, the first commercial software development framework for building custom embedded Linux® based products, today announced it has been selected by Embedded Planet to provide a comprehensive Linux solution for their EP8572A dual-core PowerPC Advanced Mezzanine Card (AMC).

The EP8572A AMC features a dual-core MPC8572 processor at up to 1.5GHz, two SODIMMs supporting up to 2GB of RAM each, up to 256MB of NOR flash, and up to 4GB of NAND flash. For fabric connectivity, the EP8572A offers extreme flexibility, while maintaining standards compliance. All versions of the board support gigabit Ethernet on AMC channels 0 and 1, compliant with AMC.2, Type E2). Separate versions of the board are available in one of the following configurations: Serial RapidIO on AMC channels 4-7, PCI Express on AMC channels 4-11, or SCOPE-Compliant PCI Express on channels 4-7 and Serial RapidIO on channels 8-11.

The default Linux image installed on the EP8572A AMC was developed using Timesys’ LinuxLink software development framework. Embedded Planet’s customers benefit from LinuxLink’s award-winning build system (called Factory), which provides an easy-to-use wizard for creating an initial Linux starting image and a build engine that enables customers to design and build a completely custom and highly optimized Linux platform from source code. Customers select from the latest GNU-based optimized toolchains enabled with uClibc and glibc libraries. LinuxLink’s update service automatically notifies customers of changes to any of the components used in their project.

LinuxLink customers have access to commonly used debugging tools within the Eclipse-based “TimeStorm” IDE. These tools help customers ensure the quality, reliability and performance of their final product. Customers receive technical support from expert Timesys engineers and have access to a vast suite of documentation.

The EP8572A AMC is packaged with a Timesys Development Center CD, which includes a free evaluation copy of the LinuxLink software development environment. The CD introduces the LinuxLink framework by providing information on how LinuxLink helps in the process of building a custom embedded product that is based on open-source Linux code. The CD also explains the concept of LinuxLink “starting-points,” which enable customers to build their custom images by starting from a tested and proven reference platform.

“We are delighted to be shipping the EP8572A AMC configured with the Timesys Linux solution,” said Tim Van de Walle, President of Embedded Planet. “We are confident that the LinuxLink development environment, together with expert Linux technical support available from Timesys, will allow our customers to accelerate their time-to-market while leveraging all the benefits of a true open-source solution.”

For a limited time, developers can obtain free trial access LinuxLink, to quickly configure, build and evaluate embedded Linux on the EP8572A platform by registering at https://timesys.com/register.
