Rakesh Thapar
Managing Director

Dr. Rakesh Thapar, Managing Director and CTO of Timesys, oversees the overall strategic direction of engineering at Timesys. His career spans over 35 years of industry experience working in software and hardware product development intertwined with teaching and academia.

Prior to joining Timesys in 2016, Thapar worked at Honeywell, where he was the Senior Director & Global Head of R&D for Workflow Solutions Software in the S&PS SBU. He was responsible for developing mobile device-based (Android, Windows, iOS) workflow solutions that enabled improved productivity and accuracy in verticals that included distribution centers, transportation and logistics, maintenance and inspection, healthcare, and retail.

At Vocollect (acquired by Honeywell via Intermec), Thapar held the position of Vice President of Engineering. The company built solutions for voice-directed work using its own body-worn hardware (WinCE based) and software as well as third-party hand-held mobile computers. While at Vocollect, Thapar was directly involved in the design of both the company’s strategic technology and business plans and its vision. In addition, he was responsible for new product introduction (NPI) which included hardware and software development, QA, technical publications, project management, and level 3 customer support; he set up a captive software development and test center in India (2010), and he streamlined the company’s NPI process through the introduction of “Agile” processes (2007).

Before joining Vocollect, Thapar held senior management roles and a leadership role with Network Appliance Inc. and FORE Systems (acquired by Marconi), was VP Engineering at Padcom and at Haley Systems, and was CEO of Pradeep Digitek, India.

Augmenting his business career, Thapar has been an adjunct faculty member since 2005 with Heinz College (MISM) at Carnegie Mellon University where he also served as Assistant Dean in 2004. He helped establish ATM Interoperability Lab (IOL) at University of New Hampshire. Previously, he was an Associate Professor for Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Roorkee (IIT‐Roorkee), India and an adjunct faculty member with Boston University and Northeastern.

Thapar holds a Ph.D. in computer engineering from Boston University, an M.S. degree in electrical engineering from Colorado State University and a B. S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Roorkee.


Atul Bansal
Chairman of the Board

Atul Bansal, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Timesys, oversees the overall strategic direction of Timesys which provides embedded Linux software, tools, support, services, and training to developers worldwide. A pioneer and industry leader in embedded Linux, Timesys’ product and services have been used across many industries including telecommunications, industrial control/process automation, medical, automotive, military/aerospace, and consumer. Under Bansal’s leadership, Timesys has: developed its fourth-generation embedded Linux development tool; forged new distribution partnerships in the US, Europe, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and India; and built strong alliances with key semiconductor companies. He joined Timesys as CEO in 2007.

Prior to Timesys, Bansal co-founded Laurel Networks (acquired by ECI Telecom) in 1999, where he led the company’s growth as president/CEO and was Chairman of the Board. The company spearheaded the development of service edge routers and delivered efficient, feature-rich and scalable services over the IP infrastructure. After the acquisition, Bansal became COO of the Data Networking Division within ECI Telecom, a global provider of networking infrastructure equipment, solutions and services.

Before Laurel Networks, he worked at FORE Systems (acquired by Marconi / Ericsson) for five years. At FORE Systems, Bansal held top executive positions including president of the Network Control Technology division, an IP routing technology subsidiary; and product group director of the company’s multilayer Ethernet switching division. He played a key role in defining FORE System’s strategy for the integration of internetworking technology with ATM. Bansal joined FORE Systems in 1995.

Before that, he held engineering and technical management positions for router products at Digital Equipment Corporation (acquired by Compaq) from 1988-1995.

Bansal has received the following honors and recognition:

  • 2013 si 100 “Top 100 Tech Companies” recognition for being a top 100 company founded and managed by Indians in the U.S.
  • 2003 Pittsburgh Business Times “Fast Tracker” award for his significant impact on the growth of a business
  • 2002 LightReading.com “Top 10 Private Companies” award
  • 2001 EY “Entrepreneur of the Year Award®” in technology for being the brightest entrepreneur in the Pittsburgh region

He is chairman of Timesys Technologies India, LLP; a board member and past-president of TiE Pittsburgh, a non-profit network of entrepreneurs, corporate executives and senior professionals dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship in the Pittsburgh region; past board member of the Pittsburgh Technology Council, an organization that is the voice of Pittsburgh’s thriving technology industry; board member of Silk Screen, a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote cross-cultural awareness and diversity appreciation of Asian culture through the arts; and board member of the Kanpur Institute of Technology.

Bansal earned a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering (1984) from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India, a M.S degree in Chemical Engineering (1987) from the University of Rhode Island, and M.S. Degree in Computer Science (1989) from the University of Rhode Island. He enjoys golf, reading, and traveling.
